Framing transferable skills | GPCB620

Description

Recognize your value beyond your research.

You've developed valuable skills through your research, coursework, teaching, and other experiences - but can you clearly explain them to an employer?

Many graduate students underestimate the breadth of skills they've built because they're focused on their technical expertise. In this interactive workshop, you'll learn how to uncover the transferable skills hidden in your everyday work and communicate them in ways that resonate with employers across a range of sectors.

Through real examples, facilitators will demonstrate how to break down experiences into concrete, transferable skills and match those skills to job descriptions. You'll then apply the same process to your own experiences, leaving with practical strategies you can use when preparing resumes, cover letters, interviews, and networking conversations.

This session is offered in collaboration with Volt-Age Concordia

Learning Objectives

By the end of the workshop, you'll be able to:

- Recognize why transferable skills matter in today’s job market.

- Identify the transferable skills you’ve developed through your academic and professional experiences.

- Connect your experiences to the skills employers are seeking.

- Describe your value with greater confidence when exploring career opportunities both within and beyond academia.

Participants will leave with a practical framework they can reuse whenever they're applying for jobs, updating application materials, or preparing for interviews.
