Intended for current or future international students in research-based graduate programs, this workshop provides comprehensive guidance to understand the Canadian funding landscape. Participants will gain insights into the intricacies of proposal development, navigating application requirements, and optimizing their chances of securing external funding.  

This session covers every aspect of the application journey, from understanding eligibility criteria and program requirements to crafting a standout research proposal and preparing a compelling CV. Participants will gain valuable tips on how to effectively highlight their academic achievements, research potential, and leadership abilities, aligning their application with the evaluation criteria of the selection committees.  

Note: Students are still ultimately responsible for ensuring their own applications conform to the instructions and standards laid out by each agency for the specific funding program(s) they ultimately select. 


Learning Objectives

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of the Canadian funding system, including eligibility criteria, program requirements, and the overall landscape, to make informed decisions regarding funding opportunities. 
  • Develop research proposals that effectively communicate objectives, methodologies, and impact to align with funding agency expectations. 
  • Optimize applications by understanding selection committee criteria, showcasing academic achievements, and preparing compelling supporting documents. 

Leaders Information

This workshop is led by: 

Cecilia Kramar, Fellowship Advisor for the School of Graduate Studies. Cecilia holds a Ph.D. in neuroscience, has successfully mentored numerous graduate students with their funding applications, and has extensive knowledge of international and local funding programs.  

Katherine Belloso, Advisor, Graduate External Awards. Katherine holds a master's in communication, has been working at the School of Graduate Studies for several years and is responsible for eligibility and post-award administration of external graduate awards.
