Creating Cultural Safety for Indigenous Students in the Classroom | GPTK769

Note: This workshop is open to faculty, staff, students and TAs.

This workshop is designed to help participants examine their personal values and biases and learn to interact respectfully and effectively with Indigenous Peoples. The four components of cultural competence will be explored:

1. Awareness of one’s own cultural worldview

2. Attitude towards Indigenous peoples 

3. Knowledge of Indigenous peoples’ cultural practices and worldviews

4. Cross-cultural skills 
    

After completing this workshop, participants will:

• Have a clearer understanding of Indigenous students’ lived experiences.

• Learn how cultural safety is defined in a university setting.

• Determine appropriate approaches to promote a better learning environment.

• Begin identifying strategies and available resources to cultivate safe learning spaces. 

This workshop is co-led by Carole Brazeau, Advisor, Indigenous Curriculum and Pedagogy, Centre for Teaching and Learning. She is Anishinabe (Algonquin) from Kitigan Zibi, Quebec and Allan Vicaire, Senior Advisor, Office of Indigenous Directions. He is Mi’kmaq from Listuguj, Quebec.
