How should you respond when offered a position? This clinic will teach you the various elements of a job offer, how to evaluate them, and most importantly, how to negotiate them.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Students are highly recommended to have a computer for this workshop and make sure they have an account set up on LinkedIn.
 

In this workshop, you will learn how volunteering can improve your career prospects, help you develop skills and give you the satisfaction of contributing to your community.

Volunteering can help you gain relevant work experience, develop critical career skills and build a network that will assist you in your job search. Crucial to doing this successfully is the reflection and planning involved in selecting the right volunteer opportunity for you.

The facilitator will help you to consider your strategic objectives, learn to select the best opportunity or create your own project as well as learn tips on how to present your volunteer experience in your job search.

Are you a social sciences, humanities, or fine arts graduate student or postdoctoral fellow who would be excited to do research outside of academia? Are you looking to develop meaningful research collaborations with a not-for-profit organization, municipality, or for-profit company for your thesis? Join Dr. Mathieu Aubin to learn more about Mitacs graduate research funding programs and how they can help you carve out exciting research opportunities outside of academia during your studies or as a postdoctoral fellow.

 

This workshop will present an overview of research internship opportunities, including exploring Mitacs’s Accelerate and Elevate programs, and how to secure an internship with an exciting organization. Participants will learn how to identify a potential research partner and develop strategies to approach an organization for a research partnership or internship.

Upon completion of the ten-week program, you will be invited to a two-day conference in June where you will have ample opportunity to network with employers, hear success stories from PhD Alumni, present your case study analysis to employers, and learn more about various non-traditional career opportunities.

Ultimately, you will come out of this ten-week training having learned about diverse career paths, gained new and meaningful connections with both employers and fellow colleagues, and feeling confident about the strengths and value you bring to the labor market.

This session will provide you with the opportunity to practice asking good questions and harnessing your curiosity to bring the highest quality information to your interviews and conversations.
